Police Commissioner Responds to Police Shooting in Lodge St. Ann
Jan 9

The Police High Command is calling Wednesday’s shooting incident which wounded four persons including a 10 month old baby and a police officer in St. Ann a case of mistaken identity.

On Wednesday evening about 9 p-m police reportedly stopped a motor car fitting the description of one allegedly involved in a robbery earlier that night.

Police fired on the vehicle after saying movements were observed in the car.

The baby and two other men in the vehicle were hit. It is still unclear how the police man got shot, as he was apart of the police unit.

Commissioner of Police, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin has in hand the preliminary report from the Bureau of Special Investigation BSI into the shooting incident

The statement issued by the head of the JCF states that the preliminary report confirms early information that the shooting incident was clearly a case of mistaken identity.

The commissioner points out that he regrets the shooting incident and the wounding of the four persons including a 10 month old baby and the police officer.

The commissioner has ordered the continuation of the counseling process which has already started by the divisional commander for St. Ann with the families of the wounded and with the policemen involved in the shooting incident.

The commissioner has also acknowledged that the police officers did not attempt to cover-up but he said they gave an honest account of this tragic incident to investigators.

A final report from the BSI is expected shortly, after which, the commissioner will make his final decision on the matter.

In the interim, the commissioner has instructed Assistant Commissioner of Police, Paul Robinson who heads the JCF’s firearms and use of force unit to conduct a review of procedures which led to the incident.

The commissioner says the purpose of the review is to determine what went wrong in order to minimize any recurrence in the future.

  5. Why in the name of God were guns pulled out in the first place. Is suspected robbery a death sentence crime? And is "moving" in a car illegal and worhty of gunfire?

  17. I wish every high authority person in Jamaica would tek time to overstand that people come from all around the earth, every country, to visit JA because the reggae music touch thier soul. If me, a middleclass white gal can be drawn to likkle island JA because Jah used Garnet Silk to get a hold of my soul and lead me to JA, where I had to see Kingston 13 with my own eyes, had to go to the places the dancehall songs mentioned... all of them! And when I reach to Seaview gardens and see a tree growing in the middle of the road where cars had to go around.... don't the high officials see that it's not just Jamaicans that know and see these things that are avoided everyday... it's the disgraceful traffic system during the day on Halfway tree road. Wake up people, the world sees you. I am just one of millions that have done what I have done. Follow the music that changes your soul.... Jah Bless Jamaica, if you can't tell then you don't know Jah.
