The St. Ann Parish Council is taking measures to cut losses and improve revenue collection at markets and transportation centers in the parish.
Part of the new measures include a cut back in the working hours of members of staff, rotation of staff on a week on week off basis and efforts to reduce utility costs.
Secretary Manager of the Council, Clinton Gordon told IRIE FM News that both markets and the transportation centres continue to create a financial burden in the council’s operations.
He was unable to say how much money the Council was losing although the Council has been saying for months that its transportation centres were losing money heavily.
The Secretary Manager said that following a meeting recently with trade unions representing the workers, it was decided that starting this month the staff of over 100 at the markets and transport centre would be put on rotation.
Mr. Gordon also said that the Council is also replacing incandescent bulbs with florescent ones and will install individual electricity meters for market vendors.
According to the Council, its efforts to cut its losses will be carried out over the period to the end of March after which the council will make a decision on how to further proceed with the cost cutting exercise.
