Police get crime fighting boost with new forensic equipment
Jul 5

The crime fighting capabilities of the police force have been boosted with the handing over of three customized mobile police stations, and three mobile forensic units.

This brings to four, the number of mobile police stations in the island.

The initial mobile station is currently being used as a replacement for the Hanna Town Police Station in West Kingston that was fire bombed in May, by thugs aligned to then fugitive Christopher Dudus Coke.

The six vehicles were handed over this morning (July 5) by Deputy British High Commissioner to Jamaica Graham Glover at a ceremony at the Commissioner’s Office in St. Andrew.

They were donated by the UK Department for International Development as part of the British government’s ongoing efforts to assist with the modernization of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

The mobile forensic units are equipped with a generator, lighting, tent and a number of other technical pieces of equipment to enhance the service delivery, including a refrigerator to preserve forensic samples.

Deputy Police Commission Jevene Bent says the vehicles are especially welcomed.

She notes that it is important to capture evidence as quickly as possible, as there is always the potential of it being destroyed by rain and other natural occurrences.

Meantime, the mobile police stations will increase the presence of the police across the island.

These units will provide a temporary and convenient police post and offer local communities more contact with police officers.

The three mobile police stations will be deployed to Area 1, Area 2 and Area 4.

The six vehicles are valued at just over US $700,000 or over JA $61 m.
