A Portland police sergeant is in custody, on suspicion of collecting corruption money from a businessman.
He has been in lock up since Friday night.
His name is being withheld, pending further investigations.
Police sources say, the sergeant collected $50,000 from a businessman, who was charged last week, with illegal sale of gasoline.
The reported payment was made for some of the charges to be dropped.
Police sources say the businessman made a first payment to the cop.
But, the sergeant allegedly made further demands.
The businessman reportedly brought the matter to the anti-corruption branch.
A sting operation was set up.
The sergeant was allegedly caught yesterday, accepting money from the businessman, at a business establishment in saint Margaret’s Bay.
The cop was locked-up on suspicion of breaching the corruption prevention act.
