Triple world record holder Usain Bolt produced a stunning performance producing the 4th fastest time in history on his way to victory in the men’s 200m event at the IAAF Lausanne Grand Prix in Switzerland.
Bolt in his first European 200m race of the season shattered the meet record when he stopped the clock at 19.59 seconds to blow away Lashawn Merrit who was second in 20.41 seconds.
His time was one hundredth of a second slower than the time done by Tyson Gay in ideal conditions at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York. Bolt’s time however was more impressive bearing in mind he ran in pouring rain and into a strong headwind.
The promoters at the meet introduced a device called an applaudometer used to measure the applause given to each of the star athletes. The 22 year old was the only one to generate a reading of 100 percent.
Jamaica’s 100m Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser, former world record holder Asafa Powell and Olympic 100m silver medalist Kerron Stewart were also winners.
Fraser cruised to an easy win in the women’s 100m clocking 11.03 seconds to get the better of the American Carmeleta Jeter who was timed at 11.06 seconds.
Sherri-Ann brooks took 5th place in the event in 11.29 seconds.
Powell was also in cruise control while winning the men’s event in 10.07 seconds. Mario Forsythe was the next best Jamaican - he placed third in 10.27 seconds with Steve Mullings 4th in 10.28 seconds and Michael Frater 7th in 10.31 seconds.
Stewart landed the women’s 200m in a time of 22.73 seconds, Shericka Williams completed the Jamaican quinela when she took second spot in 22.99 seconds with Aneisha McLaughlin placing 4th in 23.15 seconds.
Bridgette Foster-Hylton was second in the 100m hurdles in 12.64 seconds, while Delloreen Ennis-London took 4th spot in 12.68 seconds.
Vonnette Dixon was second in the 100m hurdles B race in 12.93 seconds, finishing behind Michelle Perry 12.75.
Olympic champion Melaine Walker had to settle for 4th in the women’s 400m hurdles in 55.24 seconds. The event was won by Tiffany Williams of the USA in 54.73 seconds.
