6 of 7 Jamaicans still being detained in Trinidad

There are conflicting reports over the reason behind the detention of several Jamaicans in Trinidad, since last week.

The Jamaicans, two men and four women, say they have been at the St. Helena Detention Centre in Trinidad, since last Monday.

They say they do not know why they were denied entry, as they did not flout the law.

Irie FM News first reported that the Jamaicans were not given any reason for their detention.

They said they were being treated badly and wanted to return home.

One of the Jamaicans, Michelle Johnson says all they have been getting to eat is bread and butter, cheese or peanut butter with water or soda.

However, in a statement this afternoon (March 19), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the Jamaicans have been unable to return because of the suspension of all REDjet flights.

REDjet, the low budget carrier based in Barbados, suspended flights Friday, citing financial issues.

The Ministry says as part of efforts to guard the welfare of the Jamaicans and to find the quickest and safest mode of transporting them home, there has been constant contact with Jamaica’s High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago.

It adds that the initial number of people detained was reduced from seven to six after the sponsor of one of the women arrived at the airport and her passport was stamped, indicating that she had landed there.

The Ministry says it continues to work feverishly to guard the welfare of the Jamaicans and their safe return as soon as possible.
