Alleged Guardsman robber freed by Appeal Court

One of five persons sentenced in relation to the robbery of a guardsman armoured truck two years ago, walked free from the Court of Appeal today (May 7) after his conviction was over-turned.

Steve Jordine was charged along with four others, with simple larceny and conspiracy to defraud, arising from the $44 m robbery, in Downtown Kingston, on January 15, 2010.

The other accused are Dwayne Satchwell and his girlfriend Tamara Kellerman, armoured truck driver Errol Cameron, and Clifton Kerr, all of Corporate Area addresses.

Jordine was convicted on December 10, 2011 for receiving stolen property in relation to the robbery and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.

Jordine was never convicted in relation to the larceny or conspiracy charges.

The other 4 persons charged in relation to the robbery were also convicted and sentenced.

However, Jordine appealed against his conviction and sentence on the grounds that the judge convicted him of an offence for which he was not charged.

Defence Attorney Christopher Townsend argued that the indictment was not amended to include the charge of receiving stolen property, neither was his client called upon to answer to that charge.

The defence also argued that there was no evidence to prove the charge against him, but the judge still found him guilty.

Today, the Court of Appeal upheld the defences submissions and Jordine was freed.

About IRIE FM

The station officially went on air on August 1, 1990. Reggae in the morning, Reggae in the evening, Reggae in the night was the cry. Critics said it was impossible to sustain a 24-hour Reggae music station. In fact, so strong was the impact, it proved that this format was something the Jamaican public yearned for. The 'little station that could' got all media houses in Jamaica to stand up and take note.
