Authorities still to determine cause of mystery fumes in Portmore
The authorities have still not determined the cause of the noxious substance that filled the air in Portmore, St Catherine and led to some persons seeking medical attention yesterday.
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) says it has not been able to identify where it came from, whether it was dumped, a leak, or spill despite checks made today.
It however say the fumes exhibit similar properties of a fuel-based substance.
Teams from the agency carried out investigations covering the port, the toll road area, Port Henderson up to Naggo Head in Portmore.
Director General at ODPEM, Ronald Jackson points out that the threat level is near nil as there are no traces of the fumes in the areas reported yesterday.
The ODPEM boss says the agency has requested assistance from one of its donor partners to conduct testing of samples taken today.
He says the agency continues to advocate for equipment needed for key responders to collect samples.
