Carib Cement workers to resume work following protest

Protesting workers at Carib Cement's Rockfort Plant in Kingston are to return to work tonight (April 3).

This after an agreement was reached at a meeting with Labour Ministry officials, union representatives and the company's management, this afternoon.

The National Workers' Union (NWU), which represents the workers, is seeking among other things, an adjustment in wages for the period July 2010 to June 2012.

It says the workers have not received an increase in 4 years.

NWU Vice President, Granville Valentine, says following today's meeting, the workers are to return to work at 10:00 p.m. and negotiations are to continue at the Ministry tomorrow.

About IRIE FM

The station officially went on air on August 1, 1990. Reggae in the morning, Reggae in the evening, Reggae in the night was the cry. Critics said it was impossible to sustain a 24-hour Reggae music station. In fact, so strong was the impact, it proved that this format was something the Jamaican public yearned for. The 'little station that could' got all media houses in Jamaica to stand up and take note.
