Mighty Mike Laid To Rest

A devout family man, a dedicated son, brother and father, a humble private, passionate, well-read man with an extensive love and knowledge of music, sports, African heritage and workers’ rights.

These were some of the endearing terms used to describe Michael “Mighty Mike” Jones more affectionately called “Ringo Mike” at a thanksgiving ceremony to celebrate his life today.

Jones who passed away at his St. Ann on July 5 was laid to rest at his hometown in Mandeville, Manchester.

It was an emotionally charged crowd, which descended upon the Ridgemount United Church in Mandeville this afternoon, to pay their last respects to a well-known and beloved Michael “Mighty Mike” Jones, son of Manchester along with family, friends, members of the IRIE FM family, political representatives and members of the music and entertainment fraternity, several moving tributes were given in song and speech by those who knew Mighty Mike at different stages of his life.

Among those who paid tribute were Member of Parliament, Michael Peart, Heather Cummings, as well as Evon Hewitt and D.J. Amber of IRIE FM.

In giving the eulogy, Mighty Mike’s best friend, Michael Terrelonge recounted the typical boyhood adventures of Mighty Mike, the eldest of six siblings, growing up in Manchester.

Mr. Terrelonge also recounted Mighty Mike’s involvement in the bauxite industry, where he followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a leader, dedicated employee and advocate for workers’ rights.

The church also heard about Might Mike’s growing love for music and his entry into the entertainment sector in the 1990S while in Negril, through to his significant contribution towards the development of IRIE FM and his appreciation of music of all genres, especially Reggae.

Mighty Mike passed away on Thursday, July 5, at his home in Ocho Rios, St. Ann due to complications from diabetes and difficulty breathing.

He was laid to rest at the Melrose Cemetery in Williamsfield, Manchester.
