Vandals destroy Jamaica 50 decorations in Black River

Mayor of Black River Everton Fisher says about $150 thousand dollars will have to be spent again to re-decorate the town of Black River as part of the Jamaica 50 celebrations.

This after vandals reportedly destroyed the decorations that had already been erected throughout the town.

Mayor Fisher says the St. Elizabeth Parish Council met today (July 9) to discuss the matter and decided that the decorations will be replaced by this Wednesday.

The Mayor is appealing to residents to help protect the decorations and to respect the significance of its symbolism.

The Mayor adds that the Parish Council will also have to re-decorate the town of Santa Cruz, following a recent freak storm which destroyed the decorations there.

The station officially went on air on August 1, 1990. Reggae in the morning, Reggae in the evening, Reggae in the night was the cry. Critics said it was impossible to sustain a 24-hour Reggae music station. In fact, so strong was the impact, it proved that this format was something the Jamaican public yearned for. The 'little station that could' got all media houses in Jamaica to stand up and take note.
