INTERNATIONAL REGGAE DAY, JULY 1

International Reggae Day is July 1 and the world is invited to celebrate the best of Jamaica’s music and creativity.

With the goal of uniting people through music, IRD integrates media and technology each year.

In celebration on international reggae day, IRIE FM’s Mutabaruka will look at the 50 most influential Jamaican recordings on the Cutting Edge on Wednesday. The world renowned dubbed poet tells Music News what promoted this idea. (CLIP)

IRD 2009 salutes Island Records as it celebrates its 50th anniversary and artiste/tour manager Copeland Forbes for their invaluable contribution to the internationalization of Jamaican music and culture.

July 1 also marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of the crown prince of reggae Dennis Emmanuel Brown.

The station officially went on air on August 1, 1990. Reggae in the morning, Reggae in the evening, Reggae in the night was the cry. Critics said it was impossible to sustain a 24-hour Reggae music station. In fact, so strong was the impact, it proved that this format was something the Jamaican public yearned for. The 'little station that could' got all media houses in Jamaica to stand up and take note.
