Celebrations are being held across the island to commemorate the 125th birthday of Jamaica’s national hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey.

Activities also took place in Garvey’s birthplace in St. Ann’s Bay. IRIE FM’s Andrea Williams-Green gives us an overview.

On Sunday, Irie Fm will stage its celebration honoring the life and works of Marcus Garvey.

Queen Ifrika who has been absent from the scene to care for her recently born baby boy tells music news she’s elated to be a part of Garvey festivities.

Other entertainers set to perform on Sunday are the Tony Rebel, Yasus Afrai, Iba Mahr, Lymie Murray, Droop Lion, Bongo Herman, Tivoli Marching Band, Prince Tebah and the Nyahbinghi drummers among others.

A lecture, drumming, dancing and panel discussions are some of the other events to mark the occasion.

About IRIE FM

The station officially went on air on August 1, 1990. Reggae in the morning, Reggae in the evening, Reggae in the night was the cry. Critics said it was impossible to sustain a 24-hour Reggae music station. In fact, so strong was the impact, it proved that this format was something the Jamaican public yearned for. The 'little station that could' got all media houses in Jamaica to stand up and take note.
