Accompong Maroons file lawsuit against gov’t and National Heritage Trust

The Accompong Maroons have filed a lawsuit against the government and the National Heritage Trust, in relation to the Cockpit Country.

The maroons who occupy the lands of the Cockpit Country, as well as other groups, have made numerous calls for the area to be protected against mining.

The maroons have also claimed to be a sovereign state under a treaty signed with the British government.

In making the announcement of the legal action today (June 19), Chief of the Accompong Maroons, Richard Currie said the lawsuit outlines alleged violations, of constitutionally protected rights to private property.

He said the fixed date claim was filed on May 6 in the Supreme Court.

He said several lawyers are representing the maroons, and the case will be heard on July 12.
