Big clashes expected at National Senior and Junior Championship

Jamaica’s top Senior and Junior athletes are all geared up and ready to face off in some mouth watering track and field clashes, over the next four days at the national Senior and Junior Championship at the National Stadium. 

The battle will be on to secure respective places on Jamaica’s team to several regional and international meets, including the World Athletics Championship in Oregon and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham for the seniors, as well as the World Junior Athletics Championship for the under 20 athletes in Cali, Colombia. 

The likes of double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson- Herah, world 100 meters champion Shelly Ann-Fraser -Pryce with a world leading 10.67 seconds over two occasions this season, the fast improving Shericka Jackson, and the NCAA 100 meters runner up Kemba Nelson are all expected to feature in some of the marquee sprint events.  

Fraser -Pryce, winner of the 100 meters at the last world championship in Doha in 2019,  already holds the wild card for the event and can skip the 100 meters at the trials. 

While on the men’s side racers track club sprinter Oblique Seville who leads the world in the men’s 100 meters with a 9.86 seconds clocking, should feature in that blue ribbon event along with the promising Akeem Blake, as well as the 2011 World Champion Yohan Blake . 

 Meanwhile, the meet begins at 4:30 pm with the preliminaries of the men’s 100 meters, followed by the first of six finals on the opening day, the girls under 19 javelin throw. 

The other finals on day 1, include the girls under 19 triple jump, women’s senior high jump event, in addition to the under 19 girls discus event at 5:25, just before the senior women long jump final, and the men’s 5000 meters final at 6;30 pm.
