A by-election has been announced for the recently vacated South East Clarendon constituency.
This follows the resignation of Rudyard Spencer as a Minister of Government and Member of Parliament for Clarendon South Eastern.
In a statement today, (Feb 05) Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party and Prime Minister Andrew Holness said it is his duty to ensure the proper functioning of the people’s government, which includes keeping the parliamentary majority intact.
Mr. Holness announced that Nomination day will be Wednesday February 12, and Election day will be on Monday March 2, for the constituency of Clarendon South Eastern.
While the JLP has not yet officially said who will be its candidate, outgoing MP Ruddy Spencer has given his blessing to Pearnerl Charles Jnr.
The by-election will not be contested by the opposition People National Party.
Earlier today, PNP General Secretary Julian Robinson chastised the governing JLP for wasting money on a by election, when a general election is imminent.
The PNP said it will not participate in a by election that the political exigencies of the JLP to settle the political wrangling between Senators Pearnel Charles, Jnr. and Robert Morgan.
