The Health and Wellness Ministry has received cabinet’s approval for 50,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine to be made available to the general population.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton made the announcement while speaking in parliament on Tuesday.

He said effective Wednesday at 10 A.M., all Jamaicans 18 years and older are eligible to receive doses of the Pfizer brand.

Dr. Tufton noted that the Pfizer vaccine continues to be available for students 12 to 17 years.

And Dr Tufton says Jamaica is not yet able to test for the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron.

Speaking in parliament today, Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton said Jamaica’s Genome Sequencing machine acquired late last month, is still not in commission.

He said training of workers has not yet commenced, even while plans are in place to acquire a second Genome Sequencer.

Dr. Tufton explained that while the country would have wanted to commission the machine earlier, there is a global demand for the training and experts who are limited.

He added that coordination with the machine’s manufacturers was also necessary, while noting that training should get underway in another week or so.
