Early morning shooting in Portmore leaves police Sergeant dead

A police officer was shot and killed in Portmore St. Catherine on Sunday morning.

He is Sergeant Averel McCollin who was stationed at the Hunts Bay Police Station.

Reports are that at around 1:30 am McCollin was on a premises among a group of individuals when they were pounced upon by unknown assailants.

They opened fired on the group hitting McCollin multiple times.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, Head of Operations in the St. Andrew South police, Superintendent Damion Manderson says members are saddened by the killing of the police Sergeant.

He says the policeman played a critical role in the division.
