Agriculture Minister, Audley Shaw, says the government has taken measures to prevent the Tropical Race Four/Panama Disease from reaching Jamaica.
The disease, which affects bananas and plantains, was discovered in the western hemisphere for the first time in Columbia, in August.
Speaking in parliament today, (October 08) Mr. Shaw said the Plant Quarantine Division, and the Banana Board, are on high alert, and all steps are being taken to prevent its entry, and spread in Jamaica.
He noted the serious threat that the disease poses to the Local Banana Industry.
Among the measures being taken to prevent the disease from reaching Jamaica, are use of special mats, and a ban on importation.
