The government will be removing some 2 million used tyres from disposal sites across the island.
This, as Cabinet has approved the National Programme, for the Environmentally Sound Management of End-of-life Pneumatic Tyres.
An end-of-life pneumatic tyre, is a used tyre that cannot, or is not reused for its originally intended purpose.
Speaking at a Post Cabinet press briefing this morning (December 9), Information Minister Fayval Williams, said through the programme, the tyres will be removed and re-purposed over a 10 year period.
For his part, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Pearnel Charles Junior, said the programme will benefit the environment greatly, with hopes of reduced dump fires and mosquito breeding sites.
Executive Director of the NSWMA Audley Gordon, has also welcomed the initiative.
