Health Ministry warns that stricter COVID-19 prevention measures could be imposed on western parishes

by December 8th, 2020

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has warned, that if the careless behaviour of persons in western parishes, especially Westmoreland, does not change in the next few days, then the Government will impose stricter COVID-19 prevention measures.

Speaking in Parliament today, Dr. Tufton lamented that health officials have observed a worrying spike in COVID-19 cases in Westmoreland, Hanover, St. James, Trelawny and St. Ann; with Westmoreland having the highest number.

Dr. Tufton said the Ministry has noted that young people are going out and returning home, to infect their elderly relatives.

He pointed out that the situation is a clear and present danger to the country’s efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Dr. Tufton said Cabinet, on the advice of health officials, is giving residents of western Jamaica fair warning to comply with the protocols, or else.

Jamaica yesterday recorded eighty-seven new COVID-19 cases pushing the country’s case count to 11,271.
