High level of compliance on day 1 of new Road Traffic Act

The traffic police are reporting a high level of compliance by motorists with the stipulations in the new Road Traffic Act, on day one of its implementation.

 

The act, and its accompanying regulations, came into effect yesterday (February 1).

 

Head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie said officers were deployed island wide to ensure public order.

 

ACP Mckenzie said several tickets were issued, for traffic breaches, such as speeding and improper overtaking.

 

 

As it relates to motorcycle drivers, concern has been raised by bike taxi operators in Westmoreland about some aspects of the new legislation, such as only allowing one pillion rider.

 

ACP Mckenzie is warning bike taxi operators that the law will be enforced.
