Holness says new salary for political directorate will force them to improve service

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has argued that cabinet’s decision to approve an increase in salary for the political directorate will result in greater interest by persons who now view the political field as a viable career option.

The comments come in the wake of public outcry about the salary hike, claims of inequity for public sector workers, and calls for government to review the salary decision.

Mr Holness noted that oftentimes, young, talented people are willing to serve, but Jamaica ends up losing them, when they migrate, to pursue better paying opportunities overseas.

He said based on how politics is treated, the electorate will get the quality of leadership and governance that they pay for.

Mr Holness noted, that with the increased salary and greater interest from talents, competition is generated.

This now means current holders of political office have to step up their game.
