JTA says it does not envy other public sector groups for massive wage increases they receive, but teachers deserve better salaries

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association, JTA says while it does not begrudge any other public sector group for the sums they receive under the restructured compensation system, teachers deserve to be paid what they have worked for.

The statement comes in response to the massive salary increase announced for parliamentarians under the restructured public sector compensation system.

The JTA is one of several public sector groups which engaged in a lengthy wage negotiation process. Many public servants are dissatisfied with the increases offered.

While the JTA has accepted the wage offer scores of teachers continue to experience issues with their salaries.

Noting the salary increase for parliamentarians, JTA President LaSonja Harrison says teachers deserve better treatment.

She is again calling for the formula used to calculate the payment of teachers to be made public.
