Justice Minister Starts Debate on Bills to Address Handling of Cases in Court

by June 21st, 2017

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has started debate on two bills aimed at addressing how cases are handled in the court system.

The two bills, the Criminal Justice Administration Amendment Bill 2017 and the Indictments Amendment Bill 2017 forms part of efforts to reduce backlog in the court system.

Mr Chuck says the bills are aimed at, among other things, enabling trial of lesser offences together with the offences of murder, other than capital murder, on a single indictment by a judge sitting with a jury.

It will also enable the trial of joinable offences, including those triable by a Supreme Court Judge with or without a jury, together on a single indictment by a judge sitting with a jury.
