Local investigators seek FBI’s assistance in multi-million dollar SSL fraud probe

Local investigators have sought the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, FBI in the probe into the multi-million dollar fraud at Stocks and Securities Limited, SSL.

Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke made the announcement during a press conference in Kingston, this afternoon (January 23).

Several investors including renowned Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt and elderly persons have been impacted by the fraud.

Noting that the Financial Investigations Division, FID and the police’s fraud squad are probing the matter, Dr. Clarke said international assistance has also been sought from the FBI.

He added that he will be writing to Jamaica’s international partners for help with forensic auditing.

Meantime, the Finance Minister has described the fraud at SSL as a body blow to Jamaica.

He says he is deeply pained by the latest events, adding that coverage of the fraud in every major media outlet across the globe is a source of great embarrassment to Jamaicans here and in the diaspora.

The Finance Minister says this is a time of great concern in the society.

Dr. Clarke says the alleged fraud at SSL, which is estimated at over 2 billion Jamaican dollars, represents one of the largest securities frauds in a security dealer, since the FSC came into existence nearly 22 years ago.
