Opposition Spokesperson on National Security, Senator Peter Bunting says the use of States of Emergency (SOEs) has become so routine that criminals are no longer threatened by the measure.
His comments follow reports that murders have increased by 11 per cent compared to last year.
As at Saturday, November 20, there were 1,288 murders, 128 more than the 1,160 recorded in the corresponding period last year.
Mr. Bunting says the SOEs are not deterring criminals, noting that during the first week of the measure, the murder rate accelerated with 38 murders occurring.
He reiterates that a holistic approach must be taken to fight crime.
