Opposition Spokesperson on Transport describes proposal to increase toll rates for east-west legs of highway 2000, as unjust

Opposition Spokesperson on Transport, Mikael Phillips has described a proposal to increase toll rates for the east-west legs of Highway 2000 as unjust.

The proposal was published in a notice by the Ministry of Transport today (June 24).

Toll rates are proposed to increase by as much as $290 per leg, effective the first weekend of July.

The toll road operators are also seeking to give a discount to motorists in Classes 1 and 2 vehicles who use the Spanish Town and Portmore Toll Plazas after their tenth trip.

Following today’s publication of the notice of intention to vary the toll, members of the public have five days within which to provide feedback.

Speaking with IRIE FM news, Mr Phillips said any increase in toll rates, especially during the current economic climate, will have a serious impact on citizens.
