The Representation of the People Amendment Act, 2020, has been approved by the House of Representatives, allowing for the postponement of Local Government Elections up to February 2022.
The last election was held on November 28, 2016.
Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie in bringing the bill to parliament today noted that the Election was due this month.
He pointed to significant challenges in holding the Elections at this time, among them the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted the economy and social life of the society, and the response to the effects of the weather.
He added that the cost of staging an election at this time is a major factor in the postponement.
Mr. McKenzie explained that the Local Governance Act allows for the postponing of the election for 90 days, that is next February but he said more time is needed.
