Members of the Lower House today (September 19) voted in favour of the resolution to extend the State of Public Emergency (SOE) in the St. Catherine North Police Division until January 2 next year.
The enhanced security measures were slated to end on October 2.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who brought the resolution to parliament, said the security measures in the division have resulted in a 68% reduction in incidents of murders and shootings so far.
Mr. Holness said while residents and businesses have agreed, that the quality of life in the division has improved, businesses would like to see the restrictions on commerce eased.
The Prime Minister stated that he has taken the requests from the business operators to the police command.
An extension of the State of Emergency must be approved by both houses of parliament. The resolution must now be approved by the Senate.
