Paulwell says reduction in duties on EVs will not benefit ordinary Jamaicans

Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Phillip Paulwell, says the recent reduction in import duties on electric vehicles does not take into consideration ordinary citizens.

On Tuesday, the lower house approved an order, brought by the finance minister, to further reduce the import duty on electric vehicles, from 30% to 10%.

The house also approved an order, to eliminate license fees, for electric vehicles, for 5 years.

The reduction and fee relief apply to electric vehicles that are 3 years old or less.

Speaking yesterday, at a rotary club meeting, Mr. Paulwell noted that, while the incentives are welcomed, they will not benefit middle-class citizens.

Mr. Paulwell said the government needs to extend the concession for vehicles that are at least six years old.
