Member of Parliament for East Kingston and Port Royal Phillip Paulwell has confirmed that he will be running for Chairman of the People’s National Party PNP, at the next sitting of the National Executive Council, scheduled for Sunday, November 29.
In a statement today (November 19), Mr. Paulwell said he decided to enter the race because the occupant of that office can help the party leader heal and unite the party.
Mr. Paulwell, who is Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives and a Vice President of the PNP said the result of the recent general election crystalised the urgency of the challenge facing the party to re-tool, re-energise and move the organisation forward as a united and robust unit.
He said he is the candidate with the most experience to unite the party, having served as a senator, cabinet minister, Leader of Government Business and Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives, and led the party’s powerful region three organisation for twelve consecutive years.
Mr. Paulwell said the lingering bitterness among some members from the recent leadership race is understandable.
Still, he is urging members of the party to remember that the party’s guiding principle to advance a societal framework based on progressive policies, social justice, and democratic principles takes precedence, especially now in the atmosphere of severe economic challenges and uncertainty occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic.
He also stated that his success would represent the wish of the membership of the executive council to refocus the party to its core principles as quickly as possible.
