Police and Education Ministry meet with Tivoli Gardens High School Administrators following physical altercation between teacher and student

An emergency meeting with police officers and the administration of the Tivoli Gardens High School in St. Andrew is underway, following an altercation between a teacher and a student at the institution yesterday (June 6).

 

Reports from the police are that at about 11: 03 AM, the female teacher and the student had a physical dispute after she reportedly asked him to leave a classroom.

 

A portion of the incident was caught on camera and has been circulated on social media.

 

In the viral video, several male students can be seen intervening to break up the fight.

 

Head of the Kingston Western Division, Senior Superintendent Michael Phipps told IRIE FM news that the School’s Principal, Marvin Johnson was not participating in the meeting as he is reportedly ill and in hospital.

 

He noted that the incident at the school is not an isolated one, as the police are seeing disciplinary issues in students across several schools in the division.

 

Meantime, the 16-year-old male student is to answer to charges of assault occasioning bodily harm and malicious destruction of property, following the incident.

 

SSP Michael Phipps said the teen will be facing two charges when he appears in court.

 

SSP Phipps noted that no action has been taken regarding the teacher involved in the incident.
