The bail application for a policeman accused of killing his wife was denied today (June 13), after the court heard that the woman had been shot 6 times in the head.
Detective Corporal Kirk Lawrence is charged with the murder of 45 year old Janet Hardie Lawrence.
Reports are that on May 28, Corporal Lawrence and his wife were at home in Tower Isle, St. Mary when they got into an argument, and he allegedly shot her several times.
Defence Attorney Oswest Senior Smith said he made bail application today, but this was objected to by the prosecution, and lawyers representing the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
The objections were based on claims that Corporal Lawrence is a flight risk.
In denying bail, the judge also took into consideration the autopsy report, which indicated that Mrs. Hardie Lawrence had 6 gunshot wounds to her head, and that no weapon was found on the wife.
The matter has been set for mention on Thursday, July 11.
Senior Smith said no decision has been taken as yet regarding a second bail application, as this will depend on the prosecution submitting a completed file.
