Prime Minister Andrew Holness says the government has not given up on implementing a National Identification System (NIDS).
In April the court ruled that aspects of the controversial National Identification and Registration Act (NIRA) are in violation of the constitution and declared it null and void.
This came after the Opposition challenged its constitutionality.
Speaking yesterday (August 7) at the Companies Office of Jamaica’s launch of the electronic business registration form – Mr. Holness noted that national identification is critical for a digital society.
He stressed that with innovation involving data, governments can better serve citizens.
The Prime Minister indicated that the proper infrastructure is being established.
He said the next time the NIDS is presented to parliament it’s hoped that it will be supported.
