Rushane Barnett pleads guilty to Clarendon quintuple murder; mother and grandmother of victims welcomes plea

Rushane Barnett, the man charged with the murder of a mother and her four children in Cocoa Piece, Clarendon, last month has pleaded guilty.

Barnett entered the plea when appeared in the Home Circuit Court in Kingston, earlier today (July 28).

The victims are his cousins; 31-year-old Kemesha Wright, and her children 15-year-old Kimanda Smith, 12-year-old Sharalee Smith, five-year- old Rafaella Smith, and 23-month-old Kishawn Henry Junior.

They were found dead inside their home on June 21.

Barnett had fled the scene in Clarendon, to his home in Wilson Run Trelawny, but was later arrested.

The prosecution is seeking the death penalty, in Barnett’s case.

There has been no hanging of murder convicts by the state, since 1988.

Barnett is to return to court on September 22.

Meantime, Gwendolyn Mcknight, the woman whose daughter and 4 grandchildren were killed in Cocoa Piece, last month has welcomed the guilty plea.

She told Irie Fm News that while the guilty plea will not bring her loved ones back to life, she is happy that the alleged perpetrator has pleaded guilty.

She added that arrangements are being made for the funeral service which is set for this Sunday July 31.
