by December 7th, 2021

The Jamaica Constabulary Force has revealed that three police officers who were on duty at the Central Police Station last Wednesday (December 1), when a prisoner escaped, have been placed on interdiction.

27-year-old Orville Purnell who was at the lock-up awaiting extradition to St. Lucia, escaped last week and remains on the run.

In a statement today, the JCF said investigations in the matter are ongoing.

According to the JCF, Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson has taken note of media reports questioning whether JCF members have been compromised.

The JCF says while the internal investigation is still in the early stages, it can confirm that three members have been placed on interdiction.

It says a parallel criminal investigation into this incident has begun.

The JCF says eight other JCF members have been placed on interdiction in relation to two other cases of escape that occurred this year.

It says since January there have been eight incidents of detainees escaping from the police.

The JCF says of those incidents, four investigations are far advanced and are the subject of administrative processes, while IPROB investigations continue into the other four matters.

Major General Anderson has assured that there will be consequences for persons who cause the name of the JCF to be tarnished through negligence or unprofessionalism.
