The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus has partnered with the Abbot Pandemic Defense Coalition, to help with viral surveillance in Jamaica.

The Coalition, a first-of-its-kind Global Scientific Viral Detection Network, aims to identify and prevent future pandemics.

Speaking with IRIE FM news, Professor in the Department of Microbiology, John Lindo says the partnership is slated to last two years but it is expected that it will be more long-term.

He stresses that the Coalition will help in the early detection of, and rapid response to, future pandemic threats, including COVID-19 variants.

Professor Lindo says the Coalition is a huge step for the University and Jamaica.

He notes that the University plans to use the Coalition to monitor pathogens in mosquitoes.
