York Castle High to approach Cuban and Japanese embassies to source volunteer teachers amid shortage

At least one Jamaican high school will be looking to the Cuban and Japanese Embassies to source volunteer teachers for some subject areas for the new school term.

This amidst a shortage of teachers for several subject areas.

Dozens of Jamaican teachers have been taking up job offers overseas, and local teachers’ colleges are reportedly not producing enough teachers to fill the gaps.

Speaking with IRIE F-M news, Principal of the York Castle high school in St Ann, Raymon Treasure said principals have been reaching out to various groups in an effort to fill posts come September.

Noting that teacher shortage has gotten worse in recent times, Mr. Treasure suggested that teachers’ colleges partner with high schools to seek to increase the pool of applicants for teaching programmes.
