The police in Westmoreland are revealing that 16 gangs have led to some 77 murders in the parish since the start of the year.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday at the Westmoreland Police Headquarters in Savanna-La-Mar, Senior Superintendent of Police for Westmoreland Egbert Parkins said these gangs are posing a serious challenge for the police, in their efforts to maintain law and order.
He said the gangs for the most part, used motorbikes to carry out criminal activities which are financed by ill-gotten gains.
SSP Parkins said the Police in Westmoreland are further challenged with the fact that some of these gangs are collaborating with others from Hanover and St. James.
