Social media users have reacted with outrage at the 8 year sentence handed down today to a Moravian Pastor accused of having sex with a minor.
65 year old Rupert Clarke was sentenced in the St Elizabeth Circuit Court, to 8 years each in relation to two sisters aged 15 and 13.
The sentences are to run concurrently.
Social media users have lamented that as the world celebrates International Women’s Day, the sentence for a crime relating to two young girls is tantamount to a slap in the face for women and girls and the efforts to tackle violence against women and girls.
Some users pointed out that while a guilty plea by Clarke may have contributed to a reduced sentence, the 8 year sentence is insufficient punishment.
There were also complaints that certain crimes such as sexual assault should not qualify for sentence reduction.
